Belitung is the island Indonesians discovered before foreigners did: a compact former tin-mining and pepper island off Sumatra's east coast (~320,000 people, main town Tanjung Pandan) whose north-coast beaches — white sand punctuated by colossal rounded granite boulders — look like nowhere else in the country. A domestic-tourism favourite since the novel-and-film Laskar Pelangi made it famous, it remains blissfully light on international visitors.

- Getting there: ~1 hour's flight from Jakarta to Tanjung Pandan (H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin airport) — which is why Jakartans weekend here
- Getting around: rent a car with driver or a scooter; the island is small (an hour+ end to end) and traffic is gentle
- When: the drier months give the flattest boat weather; island-hopping runs year-round with wet-season flexibility
- Stay: beach resorts around Tanjung Kelayang/Tanjung Tinggi, or town hotels in Tanjung Pandan

- Day-tripping the island-hop without the lighthouse climb (queue early — it caps visitors)
