Indonesia safety hub

Real safety information for Indonesia — what the actual risks are, how to avoid them, and what to do if something goes wrong. Calm and practical, not alarmist.

Realistic risk profile

For the typical 2-week Bali holiday, the vast majority of visitors experience no safety incidents at all. The actual leading risks, in order, are:

  1. 1. Scooter accidents — by a wide margin the leading cause of serious injury and death for visitors
  2. 2. Bali belly — common but mild for most
  3. 3. Money/taxi scams — annoying but rarely serious
  4. 4. Ocean currents at unmonitored beaches
  5. 5. Bootleg alcohol in Bali (methanol-contaminated arak)

Violent crime against tourists is rare. The drug laws are severe — possession of any quantity can mean years of prison. Avoid drug offers entirely.

Travel insurance is essential

Many policies exclude scooter accidents unless you hold a motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit. Verify your policy explicitly covers Indonesia, scooters (if you intend to ride), and medical evacuation to Singapore (often needed for serious cases).
