Sulawesi in 10 days — Toraja's death rituals and Bunaken's walls

The two-anchor route: Makassar in, the funerary highlands of Tana Toraja, then north to Manado for Bunaken's reef walls.

2 min read

Sulawesi's strange orchid shape hides two of Indonesia's absolute highlights a full island apart: Tana Toraja, the highland culture whose elaborate funeral rites and cliff burials are unlike anywhere on Earth, and Bunaken's marine park walls off Manado. Ten days handles both — with one internal flight doing the heavy lifting.

Recommended split

  • Day 1: Makassar (arrival)
  • Days 2–5: Tana Toraja (via Rantepao)
  • Day 6: return + fly Makassar → Manado
  • Days 7–9: Bunaken / Manado
  • Day 10: fly out of Manado

Day-by-day

Day 1 — Makassar

The Bugis port city: Fort Rotterdam, the seafood at Losari Beach's evening stalls. It's a launchpad more than a destination — sleep early; the Toraja road is long.

Days 2–5 — Tana Toraja

The drive north to Rantepao takes the better part of a day (8–10 hours; overnight buses exist). Then Toraja unfolds: tongkonan boat-roofed houses, cliff graves with tau-tau effigies at Lemo, the hanging graves and boulder burials at Kete Kesu and Londa, and — if timing aligns (peak ceremony season tends toward the dry months) — a funeral ceremony, the centre of Torajan life, to which respectful visitors with a local guide are traditionally welcomed. Go with a Torajan guide, bring a small gift, dress modestly. Full context in the Toraja guide.

Day 6 — reposition

Back down to Makassar (or fly from Palopo where schedules allow) and connect to Manado at Sulawesi's northern tip.

Days 7–9 — Bunaken

Boat out to Bunaken National Marine Park: vertical coral walls dropping into deep blue, turtles in absurd density, and (for divers) some of Indonesia's classic wall diving. Non-divers snorkel the same walls happily. Muck-diving pilgrims can add a Lembeh Strait day from Bitung on the other coast. Dive operators cluster on Bunaken island and in Manado — see the dive directory.

Day 10 — out

Manado has direct flights to Jakarta and regional hubs.

Common mistakes

  • Attempting Toraja and Bunaken by road — the Trans-Sulawesi drive between them devours the trip; fly
  • Visiting a funeral without a guide, a gift, or modest dress
  • Booking Bunaken as a day-trip from a Manado city hotel when the island stays put you on the reef at dawn
  • Assuming ceremony season — if a funeral is your priority, have a guide confirm what's happening that week
