Sumatra in 10 days — orangutans, Lake Toba and the wild north

The proven northern loop: Medan in, Bukit Lawang's orangutans, Berastagi's volcanoes, and slow days on Samosir Island in Lake Toba.

Sumatra is huge — bigger than most countries — so a good 10-day plan resists the urge to cross it. The northern loop from Medan is the proven route: wild orangutans at Bukit Lawang (Gunung Leuser National Park), the volcano country around Berastagi, and Lake Toba — the vast crater lake with Batak culture at its heart. It's the highest-reward circuit in Indonesia's wildest major island.

Recommended split

  • Day 1: Medan (arrival)
  • Days 2–4: Bukit Lawang — orangutan trekking
  • Days 5–6: Berastagi — Sibayak volcano, highland markets
  • Days 7–9: Lake Toba (Samosir Island)
  • Day 10: return to Medan, fly out

Day-by-day

Day 1 — Medan

Land, eat well (this is one of Indonesia's great food cities — see the Medan guide), sleep. Arrange onward transport.

Days 2–4 — Bukit Lawang

Four hours' drive to the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, one of the last strongholds of the Sumatran orangutan. Do the 2-day/1-night jungle trek with a licensed guide — sightings of semi-wild and wild orangutans are likely, plus Thomas's leaf monkeys, gibbons if you're lucky, and a river-tube float back. Days 5–6 — Berastagi

Highland market town between two volcanoes: climb Sibayak (an accessible half-day crater hike, steaming vents included), soak in hot springs after, and graze the fruit market. Cool air is a welcome reset.

Days 7–9 — Lake Toba

Drive to Parapat, ferry to Samosir Island — an island nearly the size of Singapore inside a lake formed by one of Earth's largest known eruptions. This is slow-travel territory: Batak villages and tombs around Tomok and Ambarita, scooter loops, lake swims, guitar-and-coffee evenings in Tuktuk. Details in the Lake Toba guide.

Day 10 — out

Drive back to Medan (4–5 hours) for the evening flight, or via Silangit airport near Toba if schedules cooperate — check current routes.

Transport notes

  • This loop is driver territory: shared tourist minibuses and private drivers connect the four bases; self-driving is not the move here
  • Roads are slower than the distances suggest — treat every leg as a half-day
  • Book the jungle trek ahead in high season; licensed guides only

Common mistakes

  • Trying to add Padang/Mentawai or the south — different trips entirely
  • Day-tripping Toba: the lake needs two nights minimum to make the journey worth it
  • Feeding or touching orangutans (some at Bukit Lawang are rehabilitated and bold — keep distance, follow your guide)
  • Underestimating evening cold in Berastagi
