Bali manta ray sites — Manta Point, Crystal Bay, Manta Bay

Bali's manta ray dive and snorkel sites — Manta Point and Manta Bay off Nusa Penida, Crystal Bay for mola mola July-October. Conditions, certification level, operators.

4 min read

Bali has three internationally known manta ray sites — Manta Point, Manta Bay and Crystal Bay — all off Nusa Penida, the cliff-rimmed island a 30-min fast boat from Sanur. Mantas are present year-round; the Crystal Bay mola mola (sunfish) season runs July to October. These are advanced-current sites; conditions matter enormously to what you'll actually see.

The three Bali manta sites at a glance

| Site | Where | Depth | Difficulty | Best for | |---|---|---|---|---| | Manta Point | South Nusa Penida (open ocean) | 8-18m | Intermediate (surge + swell) | Cleaning station, multiple mantas, swimmer-friendly | | Manta Bay | West Nusa Penida (bay) | 5-12m | Beginner-intermediate | Snorkellers welcome, calmer than Manta Point | | Crystal Bay | West Nusa Penida (channel) | 15-30m | Advanced (cold + current + thermocline) | Mola mola Jul-Oct; mantas year-round |

Manta Point — the cleaning station

Manta Point sits in open ocean off the south coast of Nusa Penida. Resident reef mantas (Mobula alfredi) feed and clean here all year. On a good day you'll see 3-8 individuals; on a great day, 15+.

  • Access: 30 min fast boat from Sanur + 25 min by speedboat from Lembongan or Penida harbour
  • Depth: 8-18m at the cleaning rocks
  • Current: surge + swell on south swell days; closer to mid-tide is calmer
  • Surface conditions: choppy in dry-season trade winds
  • Cost: typically USD 130-200 for a two-dive day from Bali; USD 90-150 from Lembongan

Manta Bay — easier alternative

When Manta Point is closed for weather, operators switch to Manta Bay on Nusa Penida's west coast. The bay is shallower, calmer, and accepts snorkellers.

  • Depth: 5-12m
  • Sightings: less consistent than Manta Point but still very good
  • Snorkel option: yes — proper boats; bring own gear if possible
  • Cost: USD 50-90 snorkel tour, USD 130-180 two-dive

Crystal Bay — mola mola season + mantas year-round

Crystal Bay between Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan is the only reliable Bali site for the giant mola mola (oceanic sunfish) — present July to October at cleaning stations 15-25 metres down.

  • Mantas: year-round but less consistent than Manta Point
  • Mola mola: July-October at the deep cleaning station (depth 15-25m)
  • Current: strong; thermocline drops temperature below 22°C
  • Difficulty: Advanced Open Water + Nitrox preferred
  • Surface temperature: dry-season cold water at depth — bring 5mm wetsuit minimum

When to go

| Month | Manta Point | Manta Bay | Crystal Bay | |---|---|---|---| | Jan-Mar | OK (wet season swell) | Better | Mola low | | Apr-Jun | Excellent | Good | Mola starting | | Jul-Oct | Excellent | Good | Mola mola peak | | Nov-Dec | OK | Good | Mola dropping |

Operators

PADI 5-star or SSI Diamond operators based in Bali, Sanur or Nusa Lembongan:

  • Blue Corner Dive, Crystal Divers (Sanur)
  • Two Fish Divers Lembongan, Bali Hai Diving
  • Big Fish Diving (Lembongan)
  • World Diving Lembongan

Certification needed

  • Open Water sufficient for Manta Bay snorkel + shallow dives
  • Advanced Open Water + 50 logged dives recommended for Crystal Bay + Manta Point on swell days
  • Nitrox strongly preferred for repetitive Crystal Bay mola mola dives
  • DAN dive insurance essential

Common mistakes

  • Trying to do Manta Point on a big-swell day (operators often relocate to Manta Bay; book flexibly)
  • Open Water divers attempting Crystal Bay without buoyancy practice
  • Booking the cheapest day-tour at the beach (some don't have safety gear) — see tour booking scams
  • Flying within 18 hours of last dive
  • Touching or chasing mantas (rangers can ban repeat offenders)
  • Forgetting reef-safe sunscreen — required in marine park

Combining with Penida day trips

Most divers spend at least one full day on Nusa Penida or Lembongan and combine 2-3 dives with land sightseeing:

  • Kelingking viewpoint (the postcard T-rex headland)
  • Broken Beach + Angel's Billabong
  • Atuh Beach + Diamond Beach
  • Suwehan Beach (rugged sandy bay)

See Nusa islands area guide.

FAQ

Will I definitely see a manta? Manta Point on a normal day, yes — sightings rate at the cleaning stations is 85-95% in season. Crystal Bay mola mola sightings are 50-70% in the July-October window.

Can a non-diver snorkel with mantas in Bali? Yes — at Manta Bay specifically (not Manta Point in heavy surge). Reputable operators run snorkel-only tours and the bay is shallow enough.

Is it safe to swim near mantas? Yes — they're filter-feeders, no threat to humans. Stay 3+ metres back, don't touch, don't chase. Hover, don't approach.

Verify before acting

Marine park fees + manta-area regulations change. Confirm operator's PADI 5-star or SSI Diamond status. DAN dive insurance essential. Flying-after-diving rules apply. See Indonesia diving itinerary and our disclaimer.
