Tulamben & the USS Liberty wreck — Bali's iconic shore dive
The USS Liberty wreck at Tulamben on Bali's east coast is the most-dived wreck in Indonesia — an Open-Water-accessible shore dive packed with marine life. Conditions, training pathway, where to base.
The USS Liberty wreck off Tulamben on Bali's quiet north-east coast is one of the world's most accessible significant wrecks — a 120-metre US Army transport torpedoed in 1942, beached, and finally pushed into 6-30m of water by the 1963 eruption of nearby Mount Agung. It sits ~30 metres from the black-sand beach. Open Water divers can do it as a shore dive. Underwater photographers and macro hunters return for it again and again.
What the dive looks like
| Section | Depth | What to expect | |---|---|---| | Stern | 5-8m | Easy, photogenic, dense fish life — bumphead parrotfish at dawn | | Mid-ship | 12-18m | Frame structures, gorgonians, schooling fish | | Bow | 28-30m | Deeper, more current, advanced-leaning | | Reef beyond bow | 5-25m | Macro critters, soft coral, anemones |
The wreck is heavily encrusted with corals, sponges and sea fans. You'll see species at every level — angelfish, lionfish, scorpionfish, octopus, frogfish, ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp on the right day. Bumphead parrotfish swim through at dawn (best 5:30-6:30am).
How to dive it
Open Water (no prior wreck training)
Sites at 5-18m are fully accessible. Most Open Water shore dives go to the stern + mid-ship without entering the wreck.
Advanced Open Water
Adds the bow + deeper sections (28-30m) and the option of a guided light penetration.
Wreck specialty
Allows full penetration with proper line and protocol. Recommended for repeat divers.
When to go
- Best visibility: April-November (10-30m)
- Wet-season visibility: drops to 5-15m, but bumphead parrotfish numbers peak
- Wave conditions: shore entry usually calm; check forecast on swell days
- Bumphead parrotfish: dawn dive (5:30-6:30 surface, descend by 6am)

- Diving the wreck without first checking buoyancy at a sandy site
- Renting from beach-front operators without proper PADI 5-star or SSI Diamond certification — see tour booking scams
- Day-tripping from south Bali expecting four dives — drive time eats it

FAQ
Is the USS Liberty good for first-time wreck dives? Excellent. The shallow sections sit at 5-12m, the wreck rests on a sand slope (not vertical), and there's no required penetration. Many divers do their first wreck dive here without specialty cert.
Can snorkellers see anything? Yes — the stern is shallow enough for snorkellers in calm conditions. Bring own mask + snorkel. Don't free-dive without training.
What's the difference between USS Liberty and Bali wrecks in Amed? USS Liberty is the iconic 120m freighter at Tulamben. Amed has a smaller Japanese patrol-boat wreck (Ghost Bay) plus a steel-hull at Lipah. USS Liberty has the most marine life by far.
