Lombok & the Gili Islands in 7 days
A week split between Lombok's south coast, the Gilis' car-free reef life, and (optionally) the Rinjani foothills — without the rush.
Seven days covers Lombok's greatest hits at a humane pace: the south-coast beaches around Kuta Lombok, two or three nights on the Gilis, and a taste of the island's green interior. It's the classic "Bali without the traffic" week — quieter roads, emptier beaches, and reefs a short boat hop away.
Recommended split
- Days 1–3: Kuta Lombok & the south coast
- Days 4–6: Gili Islands (pick your island — see below)
- Day 7: Senggigi or airport-side wind-down
Day-by-day
Days 1–3 — Kuta Lombok
Base in Kuta and day-trip the south coast's bays: Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak (gentle, learner-friendly sand-bottom surf), Mawun for swimming. Surf lessons here are cheaper and less crowded than Bali's — find schools in our surf directory. Evenings are low-key: beach warungs, early nights.
Days 4–6 — the Gilis
Fast boat or drive+boat to the Gilis. Choose deliberately:
- Gili Trawangan — the biggest: dive shops, nightlife, the widest room choice
- Gili Air — the balance: local village life plus enough cafés and dive schools
- Gili Meno — the quiet one: honeymooners and hammocks
All three are car-free (bikes and horse carts only), ringed by snorkelable reef — turtles are a near-guarantee off Gili T and Meno. Two nights minimum; three is better. Full island detail in the Gili Islands guide.
Day 7 — buffer
Boat back and overnight near your departure point (Senggigi for sunset, or an airport-side stay in Praya). Don't fly internationally same-day off a Gili boat — weather cancellations happen.
Optional swap: Rinjani
Fit and keen? Swap the south-coast days for a 2D/1N Rinjani trek (crater rim). It's a serious hike — book a licensed operator, and check current trail status; the mountain closes seasonally and after seismic activity. The foothill villages (Senaru, Tetebatu) offer waterfalls and rice-terrace walks for a gentler interior day.
Transport notes
- Direct fast boats connect Bali and the Gilis in season; the Lombok airport route (fly LOP, drive to Kuta ~30–40 min) is the reliable spine
- On Lombok a scooter or driver covers the south coast; distances are short but roads are dark at night
- Boat schedules compress in rough weather (especially in the wet season) — build the Day-7 buffer
Common mistakes
- Day-tripping the Gilis from Lombok — the islands' best hours are before and after the boats
- Booking Gili T expecting quiet (or Meno expecting a scene)
- Same-day international connections after a boat leg
- Skipping cash — island ATMs run dry and cards aren't universal
