Lombok airport arrival (LOP) — routes to Kuta, Senggigi and the Gilis
Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport in central Lombok: transfer times and prices to each base, and how to time a Gili connection.
Lombok's airport is Lombok International Airport (LOP) — formally Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International — sitting in the island's centre near Praya, about 6 km from that town. Opened in 2011 (replacing the old Selaparang strip near Mataram), its central-south position produces Lombok's pleasant arrival surprise: Kuta Lombok is only ~30–40 minutes away, while the west-coast and Gili-boat routes take the better part of two hours.
Transfer times from LOP
| Destination | Time by road | Notes | |---|---|---| | Kuta Lombok (south) | 30–40 min | The quick one — surf-trip arrivals barely feel the transfer | | Mataram (city) | ~45–60 min | Business, hospitals, long-stay logistics | | Senggigi (west coast) | ~1.5 h | Sunset-strip resorts | | Bangsal harbour (for the Gilis) | ~2 h | Public boats to Gili Air/Meno/Trawangan | | Teluk Nare / Nipah (private Gili boats) | ~1.75 h | Where prebooked island transfers often depart |
Getting out of the terminal
- Prebooked driver/hotel pickup — the default for Gili-bound and family arrivals; your accommodation will quote a fixed price
- Ride-hailing (Grab/Gojek) — works at LOP with designated pickup zones; usually the cheapest for Kuta/Mataram
- Fixed-price airport taxi counters — fine fallback; agree the destination clearly
- DAMRI bus — budget option to Mataram and Senggigi corridors
Making a same-day Gili connection
It's doable if you land by early afternoon: 2 hours to the harbour + boat schedules that thin out from mid-afternoon + weather variability. Land later and the smart play is a night in Kuta Lombok or Senggigi, boat the next morning — a better first evening than racing a boat you might miss. (Coming from Bali instead? Direct fast boats to the Gilis skip Lombok's airport entirely — ferries & fast boats.)
Arrival essentials
- e-VOA in advance shortens immigration (guide)
- ATMs and SIM counters at arrivals — stock both; south-coast ATMs are sparser (money guide)
- Groceries/pharmacy: Praya has real shops 10 minutes away — worth a stop before remote south-coast stays
Common mistakes
- Booking a 5pm landing + same-day Gili boat + non-refundable island hotel
- Assuming Senggigi is close because it's famous — it's the long transfer
- Arriving cashless for a homestay week in the south
- Confusing Kuta Lombok with Kuta Bali in booking apps (it happens more than you'd think)
FAQ
Is there an airport train? No — road transfers only. The DAMRI bus is the budget rail-substitute.
Can I rent a scooter at the airport? Rentals deliver to the airport by arrangement; most people take a transfer and rent at their base (scooter rental guide).
Where should first-timers base? Surf/beach: Kuta Lombok. Gilis: go straight there. Rinjani plans: Senaru side — see the Lombok guide.
