Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi (~450,000 in the city, 1.4 million metro), exists on most itineraries for one reason: it's the door to Bunaken National Marine Park — a handful of islands ringed by coral walls that drop vertically into deep blue, patrolled by more turtles per dive than almost anywhere on Earth. Add Lembeh Strait's legendary muck diving an hour away and the highland volcanoes behind the city, and North Sulawesi quietly assembles one of Indonesia's best week-long trips.
Bunaken — what makes it special
- The walls: the reef shelves end abruptly in cliffs of coral plunging hundreds of metres — fly-along-the-wall diving and snorkelling over the same drop-offs
- Turtles in absurd numbers, reef fish clouds, and regular pelagic fly-bys
- Snorkeller-friendly: the walls start at the surface, so non-divers get the show too
- Park fees fund one of Indonesia's older marine-protection efforts — pay them cheerfully

The two-sided week
North Sulawesi's trick is pairing opposites:
- Bunaken side — walls, turtles, blue water (3–4 days)
- Lembeh side (via Bitung, ~1.5 h) — the world capital of muck diving: mimic octopus, frogfish, rhinopias and everything else that looks like a hallucination, on black volcanic sand (2–3 days)
Between them: the Tomohon highlands — volcano views, the flower town's cool air, and Lake Linow's colour-shifting crater lake.
Manado city + the food
The city itself is transit plus dinner — but what a dinner. Minahasan cuisine is Indonesia's most fearless: woku spice pastes, grilled fish rica-rica, dabu-dabu sambal, and market items that test visiting nerves. Christian-majority North Sulawesi also means pork dishes rare elsewhere in Indonesia. Coffee and sunset along the boulevard finish the day.
Practicalities
- Getting there: direct flights from Jakarta (~3.5 h) and regional hubs to Sam Ratulangi airport
- Season: diving runs year-round; the driest months bring the calmest seas and best visibility — operators advise per month
- Combine with: the Sulawesi 10-day route pairs Bunaken with Toraja via a Makassar flight
Common mistakes
- Day-tripping Bunaken from a city hotel all week instead of sleeping on the reef
- Skipping Lembeh because "muck" sounds unglamorous — it's the photographers' pilgrimage for a reason
- Flying within 18–24 hours of the last dive
- Missing park-fee cash and the small-bills reality of island life

Divers only? No — Bunaken is one of Indonesia's best pure-snorkelling destinations thanks to surface-reaching walls.
How does it compare to Raja Ampat? Raja wins on biodiversity spectacle and remoteness; Bunaken wins on access (a city airport 40 minutes from the park) and cost. Many do Bunaken first, Raja later (liveaboard guide).
How many days? Five to seven covers both Bunaken and Lembeh without rushing.
